Getting to Calabria: airports, ferries, road and rail

For anyone considering a property in Calabria, the question behind this page is practical: how far is a house or an apartment from a reliable way home. In Calabria the answer runs through three commercial airports, the ferry across the Strait of Messina, one motorway spine and two coastal railway lines.

This page names the infrastructure and the bodies responsible for it. It deliberately quotes no airlines, routes, timetables or fares — they change with every season. Whoever needs a current timetable will find it with the operator named in each section.

The three commercial airports

Calabria has three civil airports open to national and international commercial traffic: Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria and Crotone (as stated by the Regione Calabria, August 2026). In the national airport list of ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority (updated 10 December 2024), they carry the ICAO codes LICA (Lamezia Terme), LICR (Reggio Calabria) and LIBC (Crotone).

All three airports are run by a single concessionary operator: S.A.CAL. S.p.A. (Società Aeroportuale Calabrese), which manages them under the control and supervision of ENAC (service charter 2025). For a buyer this has one practical consequence: opening hours, services and contact details for all three airports are published in one place, by the same company.

The airport of Reggio Calabria is officially the Aeroporto dello Stretto “Tito Minniti”. According to the operator’s 2025 service charter, it lies about 7 km from the city centre of Reggio Calabria and 19 km from Villa San Giovanni — the ferry port for the crossing to Sicily described below.

Which destinations are served from which airport, and by whom, changes with the seasons. This page therefore names no airlines and no routes; current information is published by the operator S.A.CAL. S.p.A., and ENAC maintains the official list of airports open to commercial traffic.

Ferries and ports

The shortest sea link is the crossing of the Strait of Messina: ferries connect Villa San Giovanni in Calabria with Messina in Sicily. Ships of RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, FS Group) and of its subsidiary Bluferries carry trains, passengers, vehicles and freight across the strait (RFI press release, March 2022).

In the Regione Calabria’s classification of its port network (as of August 2026), Gioia Tauro is the region’s port of international economic relevance. Six further ports are classified as being of national economic relevance: Corigliano Calabro, Taureana di Palmi, the old and new port of Crotone, Reggio Calabria, Vibo Valentia and Villa San Giovanni.

The classification describes economic relevance, not a timetable: which crossings operate from these ports in a given season, and how often, is published by the ferry operators. For the route to Sicily the relevant port is Villa San Giovanni — the landing point of the crossing described above and, as the next section shows, the end point of the A2 motorway.

The A2 motorway

The road spine of the region is the A2 “Autostrada del Mediterraneo”, managed by Anas: 432 km from Fisciano near Salerno to Villa San Giovanni, crossing Campania, Basilicata and Calabria and the provinces of Salerno, Potenza, Cosenza, Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria (Anas, as of August 2026). It is the access route to Sicily and the final stretch of the international itinerary E45.

Anas dates the completion of the major modernisation works on the A2 to December 2016. For a buyer, the practical point is that Calabria is mainland: the A2 connects the region overland with Campania and Basilicata, and a property here can be reached by car — a ferry becomes necessary only for the onward leg to Sicily.

The railway lines

The railway infrastructure in Calabria is managed by RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, FS Group). Two coastal corridors form the backbone: on the west coast the Tyrrhenian line from Reggio Calabria to Battipaglia, on the east coast the Ionian line from Reggio Calabria to Taranto (RFI, 2023).

The upgrading of the Tyrrhenian line Battipaglia–Reggio Calabria is listed as completed in the operational programme of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with RFI as the responsible infrastructure manager. Which trains run on these lines, and how often, is a matter for the railway undertakings — their timetables, not this page, are the current source.

What this means for a property search

For a specific property, the useful measure is rarely the distance in kilometres but the travel time: to the nearest of the three airports, to a station on one of the two coastal lines, or to an A2 junction. That time is best checked on a map for the exact address in a listing — ideally once for the summer and once for the winter season, because the range of flights and crossings changes over the year.
